In light of recent developments, we would like to provide information here regarding changes (as of September 2026) to the program for acquiring citizenship through naturalization in São Tomé and Príncipe. These changes primarily concern the co-naturalization of adult family members.
“Adult children aged 18 through 30, as well as parents and grandparents aged 55 and older (who are financially dependent, unemployed, and/or retired) may generally be included. However, the relevant legal provisions are currently being revised. The application can be submitted, processed, and approved. Afterward, however, the naturalization process for the adult family member—including passport issuance—will be suspended until the new law takes effect.”
In all cases not affected by the changes mentioned above, the government authorities continue to aim to complete the entire naturalization process within two months.
Citizenship of São Tomé and Príncipe allows for visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or e-visa access to numerous countries (including South Africa, Singapore, and Hong Kong). Dual citizenship is permitted in Germany. São Tomé and Príncipe even allows for two additional citizenships in addition to its own.
